Sammie’s First Day of School

I’m not embarrassed to admit that I was far more excited about her first day than she was; or any other parent for that matter. I was camera-ready before she even stepped out of the car. I took a bunch of pictures of all the kids at school so be sure to check them out. What’s the big deal you ask? Well if you think about it (and if all goes as planned) this is the start of many more years of schooling to come! Unless, as Tom pointed out to everyone during Orientation night, she drops out. I didn’t laugh. Anyway, since we hadn’t been back to CPPP since June for summer school (which doesn’t count), I assumed Sammie would play it safe, explore her surroundings, and hang by me. Oh no. As soon as she stepped inside, she took off! She ran right past the main play room, past the kitchen, and into the play yard. I was stunned but proud at the same time. My ‘lil clinger isn’t a clinger anymore. Sniff-sniff.

As more children arrived, I was quietly observing Sammie, waiting for a “my ____!” moment. To my surprise, it wasn’t until the end that it happened. But it was a mild one and because there are so many of the same toys, the situation was quickly diffused. Our first day was a success! My only complaint was my chore duty. I was relieved when I learned my duty was to sweep the floors. Score! No cleaning up art supplies or toys. I got the easy one. Wrong. I was the last one to finish! The only broom they had was one of those old stiff witch brooms that don’t sweep up crap! Well, since I am now officially on the Board as Purchasing Chair, I will make it my personal goal to get a Swiffer for God’s sake. I mean, who uses those brooms anymore anyway?

Sammie’s going to pre-pre-preschool

Talk about mind blowing. Huong and I went to orientation for Sammie’s preschool last night, meeting the teachers, filling out forms, getting a tour of the place. Huong made the comment that it was going to be the last time that Sammie isn’t in school until she’s an adult. Weird. It was fun though. Nice to see the parents of the other kids, and the staff was really cool, and the place looks like a lot of fun. It’s a coop preschool, which means that parents are required to participate as opposed to just dropping kids off, so they have tasks that have to be completed (making sure the tables are cleaned, stuff like that) as well as larger activities, such as minor maintenance, fundraisers, things like that. They also have parenting classes, CPR certification, and fun activities on a regular basis. All in all, I’m looking forward to it since it seems like it’ll be a good experience for us as well as Sammie.

Afterwards we went to see Balls of Fury at the local movieplex. If you enjoyed the Naked Gun movies you’ll probably enjoy this — think Fists of Fury with the kungfu swapped for ping pong, but with physical comedy and dumb dialog laid on top. Needless to say I loved it and Huong hated it.
