Sammie’s recipe for cupcakes

One of Sammie’s favorite things in the world is making cupcakes. I asked her to tell me how she makes them and this was her response. “You mix it. You stir it so fast. Then you lick it. Then you take it out and you eat it.”Darn kids know a hell of a lot more than you give them credit for I guess. My two nephews know a thing or two in the kitchen as well. Here are their recipes for eggs and cake.

Matty, age 4: Making eggs:
“You use a spoon to crack eggs, and you cook them hot, then put them in the oven, then you bake it.”
Evy, age 2: Making a cake:
“You mix cake, and spill it, and put frosting on it like a snow man.”

6 years is iron…

Today’s our 6 year anniversary so I got Huong a really nice iron. Well no, I actually made reservations at the local fondue restaurant for dinner that I haven’t told her about yet. But they probably use iron kettles or something. She probably thought I forgot or that I didn’t do anything, but I didn’t :) . I got a cheesy card that I thought was kind of cute too and filled it with my usual novel of a note. I find it difficult to be brief in cards for some reason.

Good eats in LA

We’ve been in LA this weekend for a wedding, staying at our friends Thien and Jose’s house downtown. Pictures of the wedding coming, but like any good trip, some of the highlights for me were the food. We stopped at Dots on the way in, a cupcake shop that one of Thien’s friends owns in Pasadena. A tiny place that only makes cupcakes, they are very good. They mix up the flavors (check the website for when they make what) and the presentation is great.

And for lunch yesterday we dropped by Oinkster. Started by a well-known local Filipino chef, “slow fast food” is the tagline and it’s the best barbecue I’ve had since spending the summer in Mississippi.

If you’re in the LA area, check ‘em both out.
